Update June 2020
Art does amazing things for people: It's empowering, cathartic, uplifting, energizing, liberating, relaxing, unifying, and fun. It brings out creativity we didn't know we had, and helps us say things we didn't have words for. Art pushes us to reflect, adapt, and move in new directions. And here I am, reflecting, adapting, and changing directions...
It's time for me to close the studio at 2 West Main. Although I made this decision a while ago, it's taken some time to find quite the right words. Trust me when I say this was not an easy decision.
Much of the studio experience relies on close proximity. Those moments are important to me but simply can't happen right now, and it's unlikely they'll be able to happen any time soon. Maintaining social distancing during events like birthday parties, which have been my bread and butter, is simply not feasible in my small studio. Simply put, the business model I've been using won't work for this new normal.
In addition, our son will be entering kindergarten this year, and we will likely be virtual schooling from home. I want this experience to be as positive as it can be for him, which will require a lot of my time and focus. Running a studio space is so time consuming and mentally demanding. I want to dedicate my whole self to my son's schooling so I can be the best teacher I can for him.
So, it's time to switch back to where I started: Private group events! Three years ago I spent my time traveling to people's homes or other venues for paint parties, and I think that business model will serve me best again now. My "new normal" for the studio will focus on things that can be done from a safe distance (such as take home kits and online events). Soon, I hope to start traveling and teach you in the comfort of your own home!
This has been the most amazing journey, and I'm thankful for every single person who's been a part of it. Truly. If you only take away one thing from this entire rambling post, I hope it's the overwhelming gratitude I feel for you all. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
